WYNK SHUT DOWN BY AIRTEL Wynk, the streaming platform launched by Airtel, shuts down. It has recently come to people’s attention that leading Indian telecom supplier Airtel has shut down a streaming platform it was operating, Wynk. This decision to shut down wynk is consistent with company’s long-term plans of rationalizing its digital portfolio and delving deeply into the telecommunications business. Wynk was launched in the year 2014 and was most popular owing to its colourful list of content which included music, movies , TV shows and live sports. This platform was designed to fulfill entertainment need Airtel users by giving them an opportunity to stream the content flexibly while enjoying their current mobile tariffs. Despite this development, the app initially spiked its popularity but the increasingly competitive nature in the digital space and the rising influence of foreign streaming platforms to alter the progress of the application. Moreover, the low percentage of subscribed listeners made a heavy impact on the platforms economical standpoint, as it did not make commercial sense to continue running it without a clear monetisation plan. The reason that has led Airtel to shutdown Wynk is tied up with their strategic perspective regarding where they want to invest and how they see the digital world evolving. Airtel has not even given a clear statement about the plans that are available for the existing subscribers touching on issues to do with compensation and other benefits. However, one should fade the expectation that an adequate intervention measure will be provided by the company to any inconvenience resulted from the shutdown. As Wynk is shut down, Airtel will shift the focus on providing value added services mainly focusing on its telecommunication services along with emphasizing on its other strategic business directions by collaborating with Apple Music as spokesperson from Airtel informed the press “We can confirm that we will sunset Wynk Music and all Wynk music employees will be absorbed within the Airtel ecosystem,” the spokesperson said, soon after Bharti Airtel announced a tie up with Apple Inc to bring exclusive offers for OTT video and music streaming services, Apple TV+ and Apple Music for Indian users.
